#FreeBlackMamas

$5M+ Raised. 250+ Mamas reunited with their families.

From 2017 to 2020, VANTABLAKC led National Bail Out Collective’s digital fundraising strategy for the annual #FreeBlackMamas campaign. Over four years, we raised more than $5 million and freed 250+ incarcerated Black moms so they could spend Mother’s Day with their families.

Partnering with 20+ local Black-led grassroots orgs, our campaign exposed the injustice and destructive impact of the U.S. cash bail system on the Black community and was covered by most major media outlets.

VANTABLAKC also helped author and create NBO’s Black Codes of Bail, a dynamic visual art series exposing the policies and practices associated with pretrial detention that trap people in the criminal legal system.

“I was locked up for eight days. There’s no other way I could have gotten out.” Every year, NBO bails out Black mamas for Mother’s Day. This is the story of one of those mamas.
